Watch the SAGE Ocean Speaker Series #5 with Pablo Barberá

Last month we were lucky enough to have Pablo Barberá, Assistant Professor of Computational Social Science at the London School of Economics deliver the 5th SAGE Ocean Speaker Series. The Speaker Series was launched earlier this year to explore the intersection of social science, big data and technology. It brings together London’s social science community and tech enthusiasts to hear from leading industry experts and academics in a relaxed informal setting.

Do we live in a filter bubble?

Fabulous talk this evening by @p_barbera, hosted by @SAGEOceanTweets, on social media and political polarisation. 140-char version: Those of us concerned that everyone now lives in their own filter bubble have perhaps been caught in one of our own – it's mostly untrue.

According to Pablo’s research, the answer seems to be mostly untrue. Social media is increasing the extent to which we discuss politics with our acquaintances (weak ties). The research found that for the average person on US Twitter they are potentially exposed to 32% political content that is opposed to their main view.
